We seek 10 participants to join us on 29th June in order to complete a motivational mapping tool, a widely recognised method which will inform you on your preferences in work. Taking that insight on board we will then coach each individual as to how to get into the optimal position at work, wherever that is. Each of our participants will complete the day with a clear plan of action and we will then organise follow up to ensure that you have successfully achieved this and are on track to achieve your career goals.  This is an ideal opportunity to invest time and energy into your career plan and CV.

We are very much focused on delivering a seminar which is focused on you achieving “what next “ and “when “ in your career.
Our plan for the day is to provide a variety of  tried and tested tools and frameworks which give clarity and insight on how to get on the right career track and build the motivation to achieve those goals. We take time to listen and understand exactly the context in which each participant operates best to focus the coaching on options and goals and how to achieve them. The afternoon is dedicated to developing an action plan tailored to each individual and his / her own particular professional discipline, career path and business sector.
We also offer follow up after our session to ensure that you are on track to reaching your goals as swift execution of your plan is a critical success factor.

Your investment for this day of expertise is  £380 ex VAT which also includes an half hour follow up session to ensure you are en route to achieving your career goals.

Motivation to achieve your next career step

                             Career Motivation

To persuade a potential employer to recruit you or gain your ideal role within your current company, you need to come across as being highly motivated to do the job in question. But how do you maintain this motivation throughout what can be a lengthy search for a new position?

An article titled 'A Hire Truth' by Tim Harford in the 3 May 2013 edition of the Financial Times quoted research by Rand Ghayad, a PhD student at the Northeastern University in Boston, that shows that it becomes harder to obtain a new job the longer that you have been unemployed – and the same is evidently true for delays within internal promotions and progression.

Ghayad suggests that employers use the time that somebody has been unemployed as a screening device. His research shows that even a period of six months unemployment counts against a candidate.  Perhaps you also know people that wonder why they are over-looked for transfers and keep missing out on the roles they think they are an ideal fit for.

So you need to be highly motivated to obtain a new position. It is natural that you may lose motivation after a lengthy period of searching, but you then need to be even more motivated, because you have to overcome assumptions caused by your period of looking.

Clearly, it is vital to maintain your motivation, but this can be hard to do without outside help. In order to help job candidates maintain their motivation, Ignite has organised an all day Motivational Career Seminar in London on 29 June 2013.

Two leading career coaches, Sarah Dudney, founder and CEO of Ignite and Simon Jones, Chairman of Campbell Black Ltd, will deliver insight and clarity into what motivates you at work and which career track potentially might motivates you even more in the future.  In addition, they will aim to ensure that you can respond to urgent opportunities too, avoiding the more frustrating aspects of the search and career development processes.

Persuasion Skills Leading to Negotiation.

The ability to persuade people to change their behaviour and to move towards our own goal is one of the life’s critical skills. In our professional life we may be seeking to persuade our boss, colleagues, business suppliers, or customers. Although some people are naturally better persuaders then others, the persuasion is a skill which to a large extent can be learned.
Persuasion is the influence of beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviours. Success in influencing and persuading comes from understanding and reacting appropriately. By utilising appropriate communication styles and building rapport, we can learn how to deal with difficult situations or bring people around to our way of thinking and eliminate conflicts.
Persuasion is often used in negotiation, which involves being able to discuss and reach a mutually satisfactory agreement. It is the ability to use persuasive negotiation that makes one a good influencer.
Below we listed some tips that can help you in developing good persuading skills and build strategy for successful business negotiations:
  • Focus on the needs of the other party, find out about their expectations, listen carefully, and clarify any issues you are not clear about. Show them that you really interested in them. This will help build mutual trust and respect.
  • Use positive language, sound optimistic and friendly. Avoid saying you disagree, use counter arguing or counter proposals instead.
  • Identify areas of common goal and communicate them to the negotiator, explain how getting what you want could help both parties.
  • Argue your case with logic, i.e. research your competitors and make sure that the claims you make can be verified.
  • Keep calm and use encouraging body language such as mirroring (i.e. hand and body movements). Mirrored behaviour subconsciously builds feeling of empathy. However make sure it is subtle to avoid embarrassing other person.
  • Know when you can compromise by distinguishing between needs and interests.
  • Make decision about the course of action and agree a deadline for resolution.
  • Have a plan for alternative outcomes in case you can’t reach agreement.
In his book “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion”, Dr Robert Cialdini described 6 key principles of persuasion after spending three years going “undercover” applying for jobs and attending trainings at used car dealerships, foundations and telemarketing companies, where he could observe real-life cases of persuasion. Those principles of persuasion are:
  • Reciprocation - People tend to return favours. According to Reciprocation (or Reciprocity) principle, people feel indebted to those who do something for them. It states that the information or favors can work and that people who unexpectedly receive a gift are more likely to listen. Cialdini says: “The implication is you have to go first. Give something: give information, give free samples, give a positive experience to people and they will want to give you something in return.”
  • Social Proof - people do things that they see other people doing, especially if they are uncertain about the course of action. They often want to know the opinion of their peers on certain aspects. An example of this could be Testimonials, where satisfied customers express their opinion and at the same time show others that they enjoyed product or service.
  • Commitment and consistency - People tend to follow pre-existing attitudes, values and actions and therefore they want to be consistent in their commitments. We do not like to back out of a deal. According to Cialdini, we are more likely to do something after we have agreed it verbally or in writing, even when the initial incentive was removed. We want to maintain our established self-image by remaining consistent and true to our own word, especially as we get older, because we value consistency even more.
  • Liking - People tend to imitate behaviour of people that they like: “People prefer to say ‘yes’ to those they know and like”, says Cialdini. He also states that “One of the things that marketers can do is honestly report on the extent to which the product or service - or the people who are providing the product or service - are similar to the audience and know the audience’s challenges, preferences and so on.” So if you want to improve your chance of making a sale, get to know the existing preferences of your prospects.
  • Authority - People tend to respect the authority figures. The appearance of authority increases the chance that others will comply with the requests. In the situations of uncertainty people will seek for guidance in order to make the decision. Legitimate and recognized authority figures help persuade prospects to respond (i.e. celebrities’ endorsements in TV advertising).
  • Scarcity - Demand can often be generated by perceived scarcity. Marketers often use time limited offers in the advertisements in order to temporarily boost sales. By doing this they also emphasize the potential for a wasted opportunity.
All the above mentioned techniques are very powerful. Combine as many of them as you can and the chance of getting what you want, both in private and professional life, will be significantly increased.

The GROW model is a technique used for setting goals and problem solving. It was developed in the late 1990s in the United Kingdom and today is extensively used in coaching and everyday life. It is easy to understand, pretty straightforward and can be applied to large variety of issues. Below we briefly explain the model and its application in coaching.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in Business Coaching - Modelling Excellence.

“Tell me…when did you first notice this feeling?”

NLP model helps to understand how people communicate with themselves as well as with others. Word “neuro” refers to the way humans experience the world through their senses and translate sensory experiences into thought processes, both conscious and unconscious, which in turn activate the neurological system. “Linguistic” refers to the way we use language to make sense of the world, capture and conceptualise experience and then communicate that experience to others. “Programming” addresses the way people code (mentally represent) their experience and adopt regular and systematic patterns of response.
NLP provides a coach with a tool to train those who want to exceed in their career or simply improve their performance in whatever it is they do. The goal of NLP coaching is to maximize the coachee’s resourcefulness and increase the choice they have in a given context. Fundamental to NLP is goal setting. Goals need to be stated in the positive, based upon sensory evidence, be measurable and owned, wanted by the coachee, and be something that really lies with the beliefs and values of the coachee.
The key to NLP coaching is to increase self-awareness to the extent that the coachee recognizes that, whenever they do not know how to move forward, it is only because of the way they are interpreting the world.
Great performers are characterized by certain behavioural patterns. Patterns of excellence can by captured by discussing (modelling) a particular occupation or activity and then using this knowledge to help others replicate excellence themselves.
The core activity of NLP is modelling, which is about replicating those behavioural patterns and the language structure.
By using NLP practice, Business Coaches helps clients to access, amplify and change behaviours. It happens through modelling the way clients internally represent their experience and construct meaning by using words and symbols (language) that get embodied and create feeling states and meta-programmes which in turn induce reactions, actions, more thoughts and meanings.
NLP practitioners can work with individuals and groups. It can be applied in areas such as Education, Training, Organisational Change, Leadership, Marketing, Sales or Education.
Below are some examples of using NLP in business and training:

  • honing management skills
  • developing excellent communication skills
  • better understanding how we learn, think, communicate, how we process the information and our emotions
  • learning to build lasting relationships with clients and work colleagues
  • honing presentation for business skills
  • motivation and leadership development training
  • improving negotiating and selling techniques
  • goal-setting and self-management
  • managing and learning from our emotions

“And…what was happening when you felt great and confident about yourself?”
Another great NLP question.  For more details on NLP, I can put you in touch with one of my associates who is a master practitioner in NLP techniques if you register your interest here.  However, I have found the questioning techniques originated in NLP incredibly useful as part of my own coaching work, even if I am not formally qualified.
